TYPES OF ENGINES BASED ON CYLINDERS

After experimenting with various other combinations that failed to come up to expectations, motorcycle engines are now exclusively of the internal combustion type, using only gasoline. The principle behind the internal combustion motorcycle engine is well known. A combination of air and gasoline are either sucked or injected into a cylinder inside the motorcycle engine, in which a round piston placed on a pneumatically operated rod pushes and compresses the gas-air mixture downwards, while a spark plug ignites a minute spark that ignites the fuel. As the fuel burns, the gases produced expand, pushing the piston back down. This generates a force that is transferred via the crankshaft to the rear wheel causing the bike to generate forward motion. These are the basic principles that cause a motorcycle engine to generate power. The many other permutations that allow a motorcycle engine to operate are detailed below.  Single Cylinder Engine: This variety of motorcycle engine has only a single chamber with one piston. By virtue of its design this type of engine is used almost exclusively in off-road bikes, as they produce loads of torque at lower revolutions per minute. The down side is that since there are no alternative methods to counter-balance the movement of the single piston, the bikes they are mounted on constantly vibrate, and they produce a deep throaty sound.    Twin Cylinder Motorcycle Engine:   Coming in a variety of configurations, the dual cylinder type of engine are mostly V-shaped with the pistons angled at 90 degrees in most cases. These engines produce considerably more power than their single cylinder counterparts. Their tendency to vibrate is also much less than the single cylinder version. Triple Cylinder Motorcycle Engine: The three-cylindered engine is uncommon, despite the fact that it produces excellent power and has considerably less accented vibration characteristics. On the down side the number of moving parts in the engine are much greater, thus increasing the required number of carburetors or fuel injectors. The Triumph Engine Company in the UK produces powerful triple cylinder engines. Having an engine with more cylinders produces more power, although in some cases, this advantage is offset by the weight required.Motorcycle engines gradually rise in power according to the number of cylinders in operation and can reach as far as six. These make for a very powerful yet equally heavy motorcycle.  Anyone who understands motor cycles, and know what they want from them, will be well aware of which motorcycle engine type to choose from. Whilst Triumph have their place in the market, the Japanese companies such as Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Kawasaki have a very strong hold on the market, with BMW taking their share, especially in the more powerful motorcycle engines. People who choose a motorcycle dependant solely on style, are making a mistake if they do not place at least the same emphasis on power and motorcycle engine capacity.

You should be very careful when working with batteries. Always wear safety glasses. Battery acid can cause severe burns if it contacts your skin, and will damage clothing. If you accidentally spill any battery acid, the spill should be cleaned up immediately. Use a water and baking soda solution to clean the spill area. This combination helps neutralize the acid.

Inspection and Cleaning:

If the motorcycle or ATV has a battery, the battery should be inspected for cracks in the casing, broken terminals, or other signs of damage. This includes checking for sulfation or warping on the internal plates. If any of these conditions are found, the battery should be replaced. You should also ensure that the battery cable connectors make good contact with the battery terminals. If the cable connectors or terminals are corroded or loose, clean and tighten the connections. Battery cables are cleaned with a wire brush. An application of dielectric grease on the cable connectors and battery terminals helps to prevent future corrosion.

Electrolyte Testing:

The electrical condition of a battery is determined by measuring the specific gravity of the battery’s electrolyte. The specific gravity is measured with a hydrometer. The electrolyte should have a specific gravity of 1.280 to 1.320 (depending on the air temperature). As the battery becomes discharged, this reading decreases.

Refilling:

Remember that batteries are filled with an acid and distilled water electrolyte solution. The acid in the battery won’t evaporate, but the water does. When refilling batteries, add only distilled water. Distilled water should be used to prevent minerals and other impurities from contaminating the sulfuric acid and the lead plates in the battery.

Maintenance-Free Batteries:

Many motorcycles and ATVs have maintenance-free batteries. This type of battery doesn’t require fluid level checks because the battery is completely sealed. Most maintenance-free batteries are equipped with some type of other indicator that’s used to check the charged/discharged condition of the battery. If this type of battery fails to hold a charge, it’s probably defective. Before replacing a maintenance-free battery, the charging and regulating circuits should be thoroughly tested.

The Italian bike manufacturer MV Agusta has won many hearts at ongoing 2012 Milan motorcycle show. The Milan based company has again won the prestigious “Most Beautiful Bike” Award at the EICMA 2012 with its latest concept, the Rivale 800. The Italian motorcycling publication, 'Motocyclismo' awarded the MV Agusta Rivale 800 as the most beautiful bike, leaving behind other serious contenders like the Ducati HyperMotard SP and the BMW R 1200 GS. MV Agusta won the same coveted award with the F3 675 back in 2010.

The president and CEO of MV Agusta, Giovanni Castiglioni said of winning the title, ““For us, it is a further recognition and confirmation of how much energy and resources MV Agusta is dedicating to the constant development of new products.” The award was presented after a poll was conducted of over 15,000 visitors to the show in Milan, Italy. Last year, this award was won by the Ducati 1198 Panigale. Mr. Castiglioni also added that “After winning in 2010 with the unique jewel created by my father, the F3 675, it is an incredible satisfaction to win yet again with a completely new machine. This victory is the greatest gift we could give to our President.”

The Rivale 800 is the first supermoto concept from the MV Agusta. The bike’s styling is very radical and aggressive, that is why, the bike has won this coveted award. The Rivale 800 is meant to rival its closest competitor Ducati Hypermotard. The styling attributes of the Rivale 800 also has been kept similar to the Hypermotorad; especially the front appears identical. But what's also interesting is the rear tail section - it takes styling cues from Ducati's Diavel. The Rivale 800 builds on MVA's line of inline three motorcycles, joining the F3 675, the Bruatle 675 and the all-new Brutale 800. These bikes are all younger siblings of MV's F4 and the new Brutale 1090.

The new 800's engine is basically a bored-out version of the 675. The 800 pushes 125 horsepower at 11,600rpm, which is 12 ponies more than the 675, and 60 ft. lbs. of torque at 8600rpm. The engine features the counter-rotating crankshaft, something once only used in MotoGP. The design reduces inertia while changing direction, helping the bike's overall balance. The Rivale 800, which weighs 170 kg., also features MVICS (Motor & Vehicle Integrated Control System) technology, which "allows for performance, smoothness of power delivery, ease of riding and extreme personalization, with three engine maps and a custom default." The bike also features Ride-By-Wire throttle control. The bike will be available for selling by third quarter of 2013 and most likely to be launched in India as well.
